Adoption Profile

Background

Baloo's story began in Kinngait, Nunavut, where he lived as a friendly community dog. When one of our rescue team members travelled there for work, she met this sweet, goofy boy and quickly fell in love with his personality. A community member who had been caring for Baloo asked if she could bring him to British Columbia to help him find the loving forever home he deserved. Baloo made the long journey from Nunavut to Ottawa, and finally to BC, where he landed in an incredible foster home in Parksville. Since then, he's been thriving with consistent training, structure, and lots of love.

Description

Meet Baloo ๐Ÿพ

Baloo is a smart, loving, and eager-to-please young dog who is thriving with structure and training. He loves having a job, learning new things, and being involved with his people.

He has made incredible progress, building confidence, improving his focus, and learning better manners around dogs and in new environments. Like many young herding dogs, Baloo is energetic, playful, and wants to be involved in everything. He'll thrive with a family that enjoys continuing his training, providing structure, and including him in everyday adventures.

Baloo does well with other dogs with proper supervision and guidance, and he has learned to be very respectful around cats. He is an affectionate, loyal companion with so much potential and will be an amazing match for an active family looking for a dog to learn, explore, and grow with. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿพ Dog Friendly

Yes! Baloo enjoys other dogs and has spent a great deal of time training and socializing around them. Like many young herding breeds, he can become excited and wants to engage with other dogs, but he responds well to guidance from his handler. Continued structure and appropriate play will help him continue developing great social skills.

๐Ÿฑ Cat Friendly / Prey Drive

Baloo has done very well living respectfully with cats. Because of his natural prey drive, it's important that his family continues reinforcing a clear "no chase" rule. He is extremely responsive to his handler and understands a meaningful "no." His prey drive has been very manageable by teaching impulse control through tug games and other prey-style toys, helping him learn appropriate outlets for those instincts.

๐Ÿ‘ง Kid Friendly

Yes! Baloo has a friendly, affectionate nature and should do well with respectful children who understand how to interact appropriately with an energetic young dog.

๐Ÿฆฎ Leash Skills

Baloo walks nicely on leash and has been making fantastic progress with loose leash walking. He has been trained using a prong collar, which has dramatically improved his leash manners. As his skills continue to strengthen, he should transition successfully to a regular flat collar.

๐Ÿšป House Trained

Yes! Baloo has excellent house manners. As with any puppy his age, he is not left unsupervised for extended periods to prevent accidents and continue reinforcing good habits.

๐Ÿ– Food & Training

Baloo isn't a picky eater and is highly food motivated, making him a joy to train.

Training has become one of his favourite activities. He has been working on:

  • Threshold manners (waiting politely at doors)

  • Sit, down, and engagement with his handler

  • Impulse control through structured play

  • Releasing toys ("out")

  • Building confidence and focus in new environments

His foster has built a wonderful training foundation and is happy to offer FREE training and ongoing support to Baloo's adoptive family to help set everyone up for success.

๐Ÿš— Vehicle Behaviour

Baloo travels exceptionally well. He's comfortable riding both crated and loose in the vehicle, listens well, settles easily, and is always happy to join his people on any adventure.

๐Ÿพ Other Behaviours to Note

Baloo is truly a dream puppy. After fostering many dogs with significant behavioural challenges, his foster describes him as a breath of fresh air.

That said, he is still a young puppy and will need a family committed to continuing the strong foundation that's already been built. His breed mix gives him intelligence, drive, and some natural stubbornness, but with trust, consistency, clear boundaries, and ongoing training, Baloo has all the qualities to become an incredible lifelong companion.

He's crate trained, respectful around cats, doesn't demand bark, isn't reactive, and is confident in virtually every environment he encounters. These are remarkable qualities for such a young rescue dog, especially one who has travelled all the way from Nunavut. Baloo has an incredibly bright future ahead of him, and he's ready to find the family who will help him become the amazing dog he's meant to be. โค๏ธ
