Dogs Awaiting Intake
Their journey to BC starts with you.
Every dog we rescue has a story. Many of our dogs are waiting in Northern communities across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, as well as in Edmonton and Saskatchewan, for their journey into Snow Dog Society to begin.
These dogs are awaiting intake, which means they are not yet in our BC foster network. Before we can bring them south, we need to make sure we have the people, foster homes, transportation, and resources in place to safely support them.
They are waiting for a way home.
Where are our dogs waiting?
Our intake dogs may currently be located in:
Northwest Territories – dogs waiting in communities such as Yellowknife and surrounding northern communities
Nunavut – dogs waiting in communities across the territory for an opportunity to travel south
Edmonton – a major transportation hub where dogs may stay temporarily while awaiting their next leg of travel
Saskatchewan – dogs waiting for transport and placement before continuing their journey to BC
Some dogs may be in temporary care, while others are still waiting in their communities for space to become available.
Why aren't they in BC yet?
Rescuing a dog from the North is much more complicated than simply arranging a ride.
Many of these dogs must travel by multiple flights, ground transportation, ferries, or overnight stays before reaching their BC foster home. We need to coordinate each part of the journey while making sure there is a safe place for the dog to go when they arrive.
That's where our foster families and Flight Angels make all the difference.
Foster Homes: The Missing Piece
We cannot bring a dog to BC without somewhere safe for them to land.
Our BC foster homes open the door for dogs waiting in the North. Once a foster home is confirmed, we can begin working on the transportation needed to bring that dog home.
Fosters provide a safe, loving environment where dogs can decompress, learn about life in a home, receive the care they need, and begin preparing for their forever family.
Whether a dog needs a few weeks or several months, your home can be the bridge between where they are and where they belong.
Flight Angels: Help Them Get Here
Many of our dogs need to travel by air to reach BC.
Flight Angels are volunteers who accompany a rescue dog on a commercial flight. The dog travels safely as part of the Flight Angel's itinerary, helping us move dogs from northern communities and transportation hubs toward their BC foster homes.
You don't have to be a dog expert or a long-time volunteer. You simply need to be willing to help a dog make the journey home.
Every flight can mean one more dog gets the chance to leave the North and start a new chapter.
