When you adopt through Snow Dog Society, you’re not just bringing home a dog — you’re giving a second chance to a dog who may have never known the safety, love and stability of a forever home.

Many of the dogs we rescue come from northern and remote communities where access to veterinary care, food, shelter and safe homes can be limited. By adopting, you open a space for another dog who desperately needs help.
Your adoption truly creates a ripple effect: one dog gets a home, and another dog gets a chance to be rescued.

Our dogs don't simply arrive and get placed into homes. They receive care, assessment and support while in rescue.
Depending on their individual needs, this can include:

Microchipping
Spay/neuter support for dogs over 10 months
Behaviour and training support
Foster care and socialization
Nutrition and enrichment
Transportation from northern communities to BC
Ongoing support for their foster and adoptive families

We don't believe in placing dogs in homes simply because someone submitted an application.
Our adoption process is designed to help create successful, lasting matches. We consider the dog's personality, energy level, behaviour, needs and compatibility with your household.
That means we may ask questions, arrange a virtual home check and facilitate a meet-and-greet before approving an adoption.
Our goal isn't just adoption day. Our goal is forever.

Adopting a rescue dog can come with questions — especially when your new dog is learning how to live in a home, adjust to new routines or build confidence.
You're not expected to figure it all out alone.
Our team stays connected with our adopters and fosters, and our rescue community includes people with experience in training and behaviour who can help when challenges arise.

All dogs are different, with different needs and different training requirements.
Rescue dogs need patience, consistency and understanding.
We encourage balance and positive reinforcement training and help families understand that behaviours such as nervousness, resource guarding, leash reactivity or house-training accidents may simply be part of a dog's adjustment.
We don't expect a rescue dog to be perfect on day one.
We expect them to be learning.

Adoption Process
Finding the right match is our top priority. We carefully review every application to ensure each dog is placed in a safe, loving home that suits their individual needs.
1. Submit an Application
Complete our adoption application with information about your home, lifestyle, experience, and what you're looking for in a dog.
2. Application Review
Our team reviews each application and contacts suitable applicants to discuss the dog's needs, answer questions, and ensure it’s a good fit.
3. Virtual Home Check
We'll ask you to provide photos and videos of your home and yard (if applicable) so we can ensure the environment is safe and suitable for your new companion.
4. Meet & Greet
If your application is approved, we'll arrange a meet-and-greet with the dog. Depending on the dog's needs, this may also include introductions to family members and resident dogs.
5. Adoption Approval
Once everyone agrees it’s the right match, we'll finalize the adoption agreement and collect the adoption donation.
6. Welcome Home!
Your new family member goes home! We’ll provide any available medical records, transition information, and ongoing support to help your new dog settle into their forever home.
Adoption Donations 💙
Our adoption donations help cover the costs involved in rescuing and caring for dogs coming into our program. These donations are based on the costs of transporting dogs to BC, veterinary care, and foster care needs while they wait for their forever homes.
Transporting one dog to BC typically costs approximately $400–$600, veterinary care is often $300+, and foster care needs can be $250+, depending on the dog, where they are coming from, and the level of care they require.
Please note: our adoption donation does not cover spay/neuter surgery for dogs under 10 months of age. Adopters will be responsible for completing this procedure when their dog reaches the appropriate age, unless otherwise arranged with the rescue.
Current adoption donations:
🐶 Puppies (under 6 months): $850
🐕 Juveniles (6–12 months): $650
🦴 Adults & Seniors (over 12 months): $450
Every adoption donation helps us continue rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for dogs in need.
We believe successful adoptions are about finding the right fit—not the first fit—and we’re always here to support our adopters before and after adoption.

Age-Specific Benefits
Rabies vaccine: Provided for all dogs over 4 months old
Spay/Neuter: Dogs over 10 months: Spay/neuter included in adoption fee
Dogs 6 months and up: Optional 2 week foster to adopt trial
Foster-to-Adopt Trial Process
Please note: Our Foster-to-Adopt program is available only for dogs 6 months of age and older.
Our Foster-to-Adopt program gives both your family and the dog an opportunity to ensure it's the right match before making a lifelong commitment.
The process follows the same steps as our standard adoption process:
1. Submit an Application
Complete our adoption application with information about your home, lifestyle, experience, and what you're looking for in a dog.
2. Application Review
Our team reviews each application and contacts suitable applicants to discuss the dog's needs, answer questions, and ensure it's a good fit.
3. Virtual Home Check
We'll ask you to provide photos and videos of your home and yard (if applicable) so we can ensure the environment is safe and suitable for your new companion.
4. Meet & Greet
If your application is approved, we'll arrange a meet-and-greet with the dog. Depending on the dog's needs, this may also include introductions to family members and resident dogs.
5. Foster-to-Adopt Deposit
If approved, you'll pay a deposit equal to 50% of the dog's adoption donation and fill out the contract before the trial begins. This secures your Foster-to-Adopt placement.
6. Two-Week Trial Period
The dog will live with you for a two-week trial so both your family and the dog have time to adjust and determine whether it's the right long-term fit. Our team is available throughout the trial to offer guidance and support.
7. Final Decision
If you choose to adopt: You'll complete the adoption agreement and pay the remaining balance of the adoption donation.
If you decide not to adopt: Your deposit will be fully refunded. We simply ask for your patience while we arrange a new foster home or alternative placement for the dog before the transition takes place.
Our goal is to create successful, lasting matches for both our dogs and their families. The Foster-to-Adopt program provides everyone with the opportunity to make a thoughtful, informed decision while ensuring each dog continues to receive the care and support they deserve.
