Background

Aspen is an 8-month-old Husky mix who originally came into care through Snow Dog Rescue after bouncing between multiple homes. He has now been with his current foster family for the past month, where he has settled in beautifully and continues to gain confidence.

Aspen is a wonderful young dog with an amazing personality. He makes his foster family laugh every day and, despite being a big boy, he is still very much a puppy who is learning and growing. With consistency, structure, patience, and positive reinforcement, Aspen has made wonderful progress.

Description

Aspen is a beautiful boy who receives compliments everywhere he goes. He is smart, affectionate, loyal, and full of personality. He loves being involved in whatever his family is doing and is happiest when he can be close to his people. At the end of the day, he loves a good snuggle and sometimes forgets that he is a big dog and thinks he is a lap dog!

Aspen is generally very well behaved and already has some great manners, but like any adolescent dog, he needs daily reinforcement and continued training. He is extremely food motivated and eager to learn. He understands a surprising number of words and loves figuring out what is being asked of him.

When Aspen becomes overtired or overstimulated, he can get excited and mouthy and may need some redirection. His foster family has learned to recognize his cues, including when he begins showing "whale eye," and can often redirect him before he becomes too overwhelmed.

His biggest area of ongoing work is separation anxiety. Aspen does not like being alone and, as a Husky mix, can be very vocal and dramatic when separated from his people. He will need a family who understands this and is committed to helping him gradually build confidence with being alone.

Aspen previously showed resource guarding, but his foster family has made significant progress with this and currently has a much better handle on it. His adopters should continue using positive reinforcement and maintain the routines and boundaries that have helped him succeed.

Aspen is surprisingly chilled out in the house. He generally does not react when people come or go, someone knocks on the door, or the doorbell rings. He will also sit and wait to be told when it is time to leave the house and will wait before entering the home.

He settles nicely on a dog bed or at his foster's feet while they are working and does well with tethered decompression. His foster family is continuing to work on consistency and helping him generalize this skill to different environments.

Crate Training

Aspen kennels very well at night and can comfortably sleep through the night without a bathroom break. He will let his foster family know when he needs to go outside, even during the night.

Daytime kennelling is still a work in progress, with some days being better than others. His adopters should be prepared to continue working on this gradually and positively.

Aspen is very dog friendly and enjoys having canine friends. He loves to play and is continuing to learn appropriate manners when greeting and interacting with other dogs. Because he is still young and can become excited, he will benefit from appropriate playmates and continued guidance around polite play.

Aspen has a high prey drive and cats are extremely interesting to him. His foster family does not consider him a suitable match for a home with cats.

Aspen is very interested in squirrels, birds, and other small animals. His adopters should be prepared to manage this instinct carefully around wildlife and other small animals.

Aspen would not be recommended for a home with very young children. He can become mouthy when excited or overstimulated.

Older, dog-savvy children aged 5+ may be a possibility depending on the individual children, their understanding of dogs, and the family's ability to supervise and manage interactions appropriately.

Aspen loves car rides and travels very well. He is a fantastic car companion.

He has also travelled well on ferries. He has not yet been tested on an airplane.

🐾 Other Behaviours to Note

Aspen is an affectionate, loyal young dog who thrives on companionship. His biggest challenge is separation anxiety, and his new family will need to be prepared to continue working on this.

He can become vocal and dramatic when left alone, so a home where he can have plenty of companionship and where his adopters are willing to work gradually on alone-time skills would be ideal.

He has made excellent progress with his harness and leash. When he first arrived in foster care, he was fearful of having them put on, but with patience and positive reinforcement he now happily accepts both.

Aspen is still learning how to regulate his excitement. When tired or overstimulated, he can become mouthy and may need some redirection. His foster family has learned his cues and can often anticipate when he needs help settling.

He is also doing very well with tethered decompression and settling in the house.
