Background

Aspen is a 8-month-old Husky who originally came into care through Snow Dog Rescue after bouncing between multiple homes. He has now been with his current foster family for the past month, where he has been settling in well and gaining confidence. With consistency, structure, and positive reinforcement, Aspen has made wonderful progress and continues to show just how intelligent and loving he is.

Description

Aspen is a handsome young Husky with a sweet personality and an eagerness to learn. He is incredibly people-oriented and loves being involved in whatever his family is doing. Affectionate, intelligent, and full of personality, Aspen forms strong bonds with his people and thrives on attention and interaction.

He is highly food-motivated and absolutely loves training. Learning new skills is one of his favorite activities, and he is always excited to figure out what you're asking of him. When he's working through something new, he can get a little vocal, which only adds to his charming personality.

Like many adolescent puppies, Aspen can become mouthy when he is overtired or overstimulated and is still learning how to regulate his excitement. He occasionally struggles to settle on his own, but enjoys relaxing with a long-lasting chew or watching "bird TV" out the window.

Aspen is also working through some anxiety-related behaviours. He experiences separation anxiety, some general anxiety in new situations, and crate anxiety. In addition, he has shown some resource guarding, including around high-value items and occasionally his people. His foster family has been working diligently on these behaviours using positive reinforcement, and Aspen has already made encouraging progress. He will need adopters who are committed to continuing his training, maintaining consistent routines, and helping him build confidence.

Aspen would do best with an active, patient family who understands adolescent dogs and is excited to continue his training while providing plenty of mental enrichment, structure, and companionship.

It Depends

Aspen enjoys other dogs and generally does well with canine friends. He loves to play but can sometimes become a little too rough or overly excited. He benefits from appropriate playmates and owners who can step in to redirect him when play becomes too much.

Dog-Savvy Cats Only

Aspen has lived successfully with cats and generally wants to interact with them rather than harm them. However, if a cat runs, his instinct is to chase. He would do best in a home with confident, dog-savvy cats that are comfortable living with an energetic young Husky. Slow introductions and ongoing supervision are recommended.

Prey Drive: Yes

Like many Huskies, Aspen has a natural instinct to chase moving animals. His adopters should be mindful of this around cats, wildlife, and other small animals.

Aspen would do best with older, dog-savvy children who understand canine body language and boundaries. He can become mouthy or snappy when overstimulated, making him a better match for families without very young children.

Aspen is excellent on leash and has impressive leash manners for such a young dog.

Yes

Aspen is house trained and does well with a consistent routine. He benefits from potty breaks every 2–3 hours to remain successful.

Previous urinary concerns have completely resolved without veterinary intervention.

Aspen loves food and is extremely motivated by treats, making him a joy to train.

Important: Aspen has a sensitive stomach and should not be fed chicken or other poultry products. Since switching away from poultry, his previous itching has completely resolved.

Aspen is an affectionate, loyal young dog who loves being close to his people. He thrives on companionship and enjoys participating in family life.

When Aspen first arrived in foster care, he was very fearful of having his harness and leash put on. With patience and positive training, he now happily accepts both. Because this fear developed before coming into foster care, his new family should be prepared to continue building positive associations if the behavior resurfaces in a new environment.

Aspen is looking for a committed home that understands he is still a young dog learning how to navigate the world. With continued positive training, patience, and consistency, he has all the makings of an incredible lifelong companion. His adopters will be rewarded with a deeply loyal, affectionate, and highly trainable best friend who loves nothing more than being part of the family.
