Background

Zelda is an approximately 8-month-old female Pit Bull mix weighing around 50 lbs. She was surrendered by her owner, who was experiencing homelessness. Zelda came from a challenging environment that included domestic abuse, and as a result, she can be protective of her person until she feels safe. With slow introductions and reassurance, she has shown that she is able to build trust and become a loving, welcoming companion.

Zelda is up to date on all vaccinations. She is not yet spayed. She has some food sensitivities, and her foster family is currently working to determine which ingredients may be causing issues.

Description

Zelda is a sweet, goofy girl with a big heart and lots of love to give. She has a fun personality and loves being part of the family. She is still learning her manners but has been making great progress with training and is eager to please.

She absolutely loves being outside and enjoys exploring the yard, always hopeful she will catch a squirrel or compost mouse (so far, no luck!). She also has a special talent for helping with Amazon and grocery deliveries — once given permission, she loves shredding cardboard boxes into tiny pieces.

Zelda has made wonderful progress with her confidence and training. She has learned that barking at dogs and neighbours through the fence is not necessary and responds well to guidance. She is a smart girl who enjoys learning and continues to improve every day.

🐾 Dog Friendly

Yes. Zelda enjoys meeting new dogs and likes to thoroughly sniff and get to know them. She plays well with other dogs, though she may try to be a little bossy with smaller dogs. Continued socialization and training will help her continue developing appropriate play skills.

🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive

Yes, with appropriate introductions. Zelda has been respectful of the cat in her foster home and understands boundaries. After a previous interaction where a cat corrected her, she learned that cats are not to be chased or bothered.

Zelda does have some prey drive. On walks, she may pull toward rabbits and other small animals she spots, so continued leash training and management will be important.

👧 Kid Friendly

Yes. Zelda has been tested with older children and has done well.

Because Zelda can be protective of her people, slow introductions and teaching her that visitors are safe will be important in her new home.

Zelda enjoys going for walks and is eager to explore. She is improving on leash but will need continued work with pulling, especially when she spots exciting distractions like wildlife.

Yes. After the first couple of days settling in, Zelda has had no accidents in the home.

Zelda is currently working through some food sensitivities, and her foster is determining which foods work best for her.

She knows several commands, including sit, stay, come, and free. She is a smart, motivated girl who responds well to positive reinforcement and enjoys learning new skills.

Zelda travels well. She may be a little whiny or nervous when first getting in the vehicle but settles quickly.

Zelda is a loving dog who bonds closely with her people. Due to her past experiences, she can be protective when meeting unfamiliar people and has reacted by nipping when someone approached without an introduction or when she was seeking attention.

With proper introductions, clear boundaries, and continued training, Zelda has shown she can relax and welcome new people. Her adopters should be committed to helping her build confidence and understand that she is safe.
