Adoption Profile
Background
Coco comes from a community outside Yellowknife, where she had been tied outdoors at a home with many other dogs, though she was occasionally brought inside as well. She is believed to be from the same family as fellow TACS rescue Ricky.
While much of her early life is unknown, we do know her owner became overwhelmed caring for Coco and her six puppies. They reached out to TACS for help, and Coco — an absolutely incredible, devoted mama — and all six pups were surrendered so they could receive proper care and find loving homes.
Description
Coco is a gentle, sensitive soul who is finally learning she is safe. She’s affectionate, sweet, a little goofy, and eager to bond with her people. Each day she shows more trust, more personality, and more joy. With patience, routine, and compassion, she will blossom into an incredibly loyal companion.
🐾 Dog Friendly
Coco is rediscovering how to “be a dog.” She loves playing with the resident dogs and is now initiating play more and more. She communicates well and learns dog manners quickly through social interaction.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
May be okay to live with dog savvy cats after proper introduction
👧 Kid Friendly
Improving steadily. Kids can approach her without issue; she may initially back away out of shyness, but she does not panic or show any negative or defensive reactions.
🦮 Leash Skills
Improving. Walks are no longer intimidating for her. With the spring melt she’s curious and alert, but she’s gaining confidence and consistency each day.
🚻 House Trained
Coco is still progressing with house training.
When left inside, she may have accidents.
She consistently uses a pee pad when provided.
With routine, consistency, and regular outdoor breaks, she is expected to continue improving quickly.
🍖 Food & Training
Recall & Coming Inside
Huge progress here! Coco now reliably comes inside on her own. She’ll even stand at the door and softly whine to come in without being called — a big trust and confidence milestone.
She can be left outside safely; she no longer attempts to hop fences or escape and always returns to the door.
🐾 Social Learning
Enjoys playing with other dogs
Learning dog manners well
Becoming comfortable with the alleyway, outdoor noises, and everyday environments
Still shy with fast movements, but a warm, happy tone brings her running back for praise
Has some resource guarding with food
❤️ Handling & Human Trust
Coco seeks out affection and reassurance.
A recent milestone: she jumped up and curled beside her foster during a nap — a huge sign of growing trust.
Kids can approach her; she may step back at first but has shown zero fear aggression.
🚗 Vehicle Behaviour
Coco is generally calm in vehicles and settles nicely once the ride begins.
Important: If a window is open, she may try to jump out — likely instinct or curiosity.
For safety, windows should remain closed or only slightly cracked during transport.
🐾 Other Behaviours to Note
Coco has a few understandable scavenger quirks from her past:
Garbage, recycling, and food items need to be kept secure
She’s learning that tables aren’t for standing
She is learning that windows are solid (she brings real “Windex commercial energy”)
She is currently working on house manners as she settles and her personality continues to come out.
Most importantly:
Coco is completely non-violent. She has no history of growling, snarling, snapping, or guarding.
Her fear looks more like Scooby-Doo than anything else — goofy little backward scrambles instead of defensiveness.
