Adoption Profile
Background
Chip was originally transferred from Tilcho Animal Care Society.
Before entering our care, Chip had been rescued from a small community after repeatedly escaping his home. His owner ultimately informed bylaw that they did not want him returned. During this time, Amy from TACS encountered Chip in the community and noted that he approached her completely without fear, immediately engaging in playful behaviour with her and the dog she was with.
After a month of capture-related efforts, Chip was finally secured. When seen again by Amy, that same warm, goofy personality was still there, but it was now overshadowed by fear, anxiety, and a strong survival instinct.
During his time in TACS care, Chip was trialed in several rescues and foster homes but continued to struggle with containment, often escaping and taking himself on multi-day “adventures.”
Chip was transferred into Snow Dogs care in late November/early December, where his recovery journey began—slowly rediscovering the happy, goofy boy Amy originally met.
Description
Chip (aka Chipley Bear, aka Captain Eyeliner) is a deeply affectionate, people-oriented boy who bonds strongly with his humans. He is gentle, loving, and great with people of all ages (from 3 to 90+).
He is social and eager to make friends with both people and dogs. While he can be cautious around very high-energy dogs at first, he does well with slow introductions and will eventually engage in playful zoomies once comfortable.
Chip does have some resource guarding around food and toys with other animals, but this is easily managed through structure (removing high-value items from shared spaces). He shows no guarding behaviour toward people and allows handling of food and toys without issue.
He is extremely food motivated, which makes him highly trainable and eager to please—but also opportunistic. Counter surfing and food theft are very possible if food is left within reach.
At home, Chip is calm, well-mannered, and fully house trained. He will signal when he needs to go outside with a paw at the door or expressive husky vocalizations. He settles well alone, typically choosing a cozy corner for naps with no destructive behaviour.
He does require daily exercise and enrichment. If under-stimulated, he may attempt to self-entertain by wandering. With appropriate outlets, he is very manageable and content. Chip thrives when he is included in daily life and given both physical and mental stimulation.
If you want a loyal companion who will love you deeply, follow you everywhere, and absolutely never say no to snacks—Chip is your guy.
🐾 Dog Friendly
Chip is friendly and polite with other dogs when introduced appropriately. On walks, he greets dogs calmly and respectfully.
He may be unsure around very high-energy dogs at first but warms up with time and can become playful and social once comfortable.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Chip has moderate prey drive and shows strong interest in squirrels, rabbits, and chickens.
He may be suitable around confident, dog-savvy cats, but is not recommended for homes with anxious or reactive cats due to his play/paw and chase interest.
👧 Kid Friendly
Chip is gentle and friendly with children. He has met neighborhood kids, including loud and energetic ones, without issue.
🦮 Leash Skills
Chip walks very well on leash with minimal pulling on a flat collar or harness. He is generally respectful on walks and easily redirected if distracted by wildlife or other dogs.
No leash reactivity has been observed in his current foster home.
🚻 House Trained
Yes. Chip is fully house trained with zero accidents in his current foster home, even during periods of stomach upset. He reliably signals when he needs to go outside.
🍖Food & Training
Chip is highly food motivated and eager to learn. He knows sit, down, stay, paw, off, and wait.
He benefits from slow feeders, puzzle toys, and snuffle mats due to his fast eating style.
He walks well on heel and responds quickly to recall within controlled environments. While off-leash recall has not been fully tested in open environments, he shows strong engagement with trusted handlers and has potential for reliable recall with continued training.
He enjoys toys, especially squeaky toys and chew items. He likes chasing balls but is still learning fetch and return.
He is crate trained and will settle, though he prefers to “customize” his space—often rearranging or shredding bedding before relaxing.
Chip currently enjoys daily exercise (minimum ~5 km total walking or equivalent enrichment), along with social time with other dogs. He would make an excellent hiking, running, or biking companion.
He is non-destructive when left alone indoors.
🚗Vehicle
Chip loves car rides. He enjoys sticking his nose out the window and taking in the breeze. He travels well and settles comfortably.
🐾Other Behaviors to Note
Can self-explore if bored and has a history of travelling significant distances when uncontained
Requires at least 2 walks per day, plus play and enrichment
Doors and exits must be securely managed at all times
Strong desire to roam if under stimulated, but typically returns when called if he does get out
Fencing alone is not considered fully reliable for containment if he is bored
Unsupervised tethering is not advised - he will chew through it
Chip would thrive in a home that can meet his exercise and enrichment needs consistently. He would do well with another well-matched dog or as a solo dog in a home with strong human companionship.
He is not separation-anxious, but he is a sensitive boy who does best with companionship, routine, and positive reinforcement.
Chip is a very good boy who is ready for a home that understands his adventurous spirit—and is excited to turn it into shared adventures instead of solo ones.
