Adoption Profile
Background
Bauer came from a difficult, neglectful past where he constantly had to compete for food and received little to no consistent care. When rescued, he was severely underweight, frail, and struggling to stay stable on his feet. He required frequent small meals and very close monitoring to begin recovering.
Despite everything he’s endured, Bauer is incredibly resilient. With proper nutrition, routine, and love, he has made remarkable progress—gaining weight, building strength, learning daily routines, and even sleeping through the night. He is finally experiencing what it feels like to be safe and cherished.
Because of his early life, Bauer still has a few sensitivities. He can become anxious when left alone, may guard food, and can feel overwhelmed in unfamiliar situations. But at his core, he is gentle, affectionate, and thrives in a calm home where he feels secure. He’s well on his way to a full recovery and just needs continued patience, stability, and love.
Bauer is a quiet dog—he rarely barks. However, when left alone or when his favourite human steps outside, he may cry for them.
Description
Bauer is a gentle, affectionate little soul who thrives on closeness and comfort. He loves to snuggle, nap in warm cozy spots, and stay close to his people whenever he can. Sweet-natured and eager to please, he’s very food motivated and enjoys learning, making him a great candidate for continued positive training.
He grew up in Wekweètì and spent his first 1.5 years living outdoors without shelter, often starving and surrounded by many other hungry dogs. Despite that, he grew up around young children and many dogs, and he still feels safest around kids.
Bauer gets along well with other dogs and has shown a calm, respectful attitude toward small animals. He enjoys car rides, walks, and quiet companionship, and he’s happiest in a peaceful environment where he can relax.
Because of his past, he can become anxious when left alone. His foster takes him to work, so he is rarely alone, but he will need a patient caregiver who can offer reassurance and routine while helping him build confidence.
Physically, Bauer is a petite, foxlike husky with a warm golden-orange coat. He’s small, sturdy, and easy to handle. At intake he weighed ~27 lbs; he is now ~36 lbs but should reach ~50–55 lbs.
🐾 Dog Friendly
Yes — Bauer does best living with another calm, gentle dog, as their presence helps comfort him and makes him feel more secure.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Untested with cats, but has shown no prey drive around chicks, chickens, parrots, or pet rats in his foster home.
👧 Kid Friendly
Great with kids—calmer children preferred.
Kids should not hand-feed him, as he may accidentally nip in his eagerness to eat.
He grew up around young children and immediately felt safe with them after rescue. He trusts kids more easily than adults and happily wags his tail when he sees them.
🦮 Leash Skills
Great on leash. As he continues to gain strength, he may need some refresher training.
🚻 House Trained
Improving every day—very close to being fully house trained.
He is also learning to feel safe in his crate; his foster is actively working on crate training for times he's home alone.
🍖 Food & Training
Because he desperately needs to put on weight, Bauer is currently a very eager eater. This will likely settle once he learns food is always available. A slow-feeder bowl is recommended.
He lived outdoors with many starving dogs, so food competition shaped his behaviour.
🚗 Vehicle Behaviour
Loves car rides! He is calm and comfortable whether free or crated.
🐾 Other Behaviours to Note
Bauer’s health is improving quickly.
He needs a home where someone is home most of the day and the environment is calm.
He would do well with another calm, gentle dog—having a canine companion gives him comfort, especially when left alone.
He isn’t yet very playful with dogs but enjoys their companionship and will cuddle with them at nap time.
Slow introductions with new dogs are important; he was likely attacked by other dogs in the past and can be nervous when approached suddenly.
Once he knows a dog is friendly, he is excellent with them.
He loves snuggling in his crate or curling up on the bed and is obsessed with finding sunny windows to nap in.
Due to his condition, he takes many naps and enjoys the comforts of indoor life.
Bauer is not reactive, but if pushed too quickly into uncomfortable situations or if scared, he may nip—this is fear-based, not aggression.
