Adoption Profile
Background
Not much is known about Ajax’s early background. He was rescued from the community bylaw pound and recently completed his journey to his foster home in B.C.
Description
Ajax is an incredibly smart, affectionate, and eager-to-please companion. He picks up routines and training very quickly both in the home and on leash. He hasn’t shown any stubbornness—he genuinely wants to be involved in whatever his people are doing.
He bonds quickly and can settle with ease once he feels comfortable in a space.
When he’s feeling cuddly, Ajax is a total flopper—he’ll collapse into your arms, your lap, or onto the floor for belly rubs without hesitation. A big stretch is often followed by a dramatic flop back down.
Ajax absolutely LOVES being outdoors and active. If he’s not outside or napping, you’ll likely find him watching the world from a window. He is friendly, outgoing, and very happy to meet new people and dogs.
<Please describe the personality or behaviours you have observed. Don’t worry about being a wordsmith. Bullet points, short paragraphs are all great. Please add to the descriptions if others have already started>
🐾 Dog Friendly
Yes
Ajax is very friendly and curious about other dogs. He happily greets dogs and enjoys exchanging sniffs. If another dog barks or shows aggression, Ajax remains non-reactive and usually just moves on. If another dog or owner doesn’t want to greet, he is easily redirected with encouragement.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Cat Friendly - curious but friendly
No prey drive has been seen so far
👧 Kid Friendly
Yes (as visitors and outside introductions)
Ajax has met kids aged 4–6 both on walks and in the home. He enjoys receiving pets from them, but he is still a young, excitable dog and isn’t fully aware of his size or body. He could easily knock small children over when excited.
🦮 Leash Skills
Ajax is doing wonderfully on leash. He loves being outside, so his pace can be quick and he may pull toward interesting scents. Once he settles into a rhythm, his pulling decreases noticeably. He is very responsive to leash guidance and will follow gentle directional cues. He has also enjoyed light jogs on leash and seems comfortable with a faster pace.
🚻 House Trained
Yes
Ajax is fully house trained and sleeps through the night without interruption (typically from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.).
He does show some separation anxiety when someone leaves the home, even if others remain. He will bark and cry until the car leaves the driveway but settles quickly afterward. During short trials (~1 hour), he has not been destructive and hasn’t counter-surfed.
🍖 Food & Training
Ajax is gradually increasing his food intake but can be a bit picky. Beef and duck flavours have been his favourites so far. He enjoys a combination of kibble with soft or cooked foods.
He is motivated by treats during training and enjoys Dentasticks, pig ears, bones, and peanut-butter-filled Kongs as calming activities.
🚗 Vehicle Behaviour
Ajax is confident getting into the car and shows no signs of nervousness or motion sickness. A previous foster noted he once jumped out of a car window, so windows are kept only partially open.
He may develop some anxiety with other dogs in the car and would benefit from continued car desensitization.
🐾 Other Behaviours to Note
Ajax loves being outside and having freedom. He may bolt through an open door if given the chance.
When off leash, he does not reliably respond to his name yet, so fully fenced dog parks are best for safe off-leash time. He has not attempted to jump fences.
As a young dog, he can become mouthy and jump when overstimulated. He responds well to “No” and to redirecting with a toy.
He can be fearful when someone grabs his collar, which may escalate his behaviour, so alternative redirection methods are recommended.
Ajax may initially be wary of some men, particularly tall or broad individuals. He may bark and avoid approach on first meetings. This has resolved quickly with both his current and previous foster, but adopters should be aware this behaviour may appear initially.
