Adoption Profile
Background
Not much is known about Ajax’s early life. He was rescued from the community bylaw pound and recently made his journey to his foster home in B.C., where he has been settling in beautifully.
Description
Ajax is an incredibly smart, affectionate, and eager-to-please young dog. He picks up routines and training quickly—both in the home and on leash—and genuinely wants to be part of whatever his people are doing. He bonds fast and settles easily once he feels comfortable in a space.
When he’s feeling cuddly, Ajax transforms into a total flopper. He’ll collapse into your lap, arms, or onto the floor for belly rubs without hesitation. A dramatic stretch is almost always followed by an even more dramatic flop.
Ajax LOVES being outdoors and active. When he’s not outside or napping, he enjoys watching the world from the window. He is friendly, social, and delighted to meet new people and dogs.
🐾 Dog Friendly
Yes.
Ajax greets dogs politely and enjoys exchanging sniffs. If another dog barks or acts aggressively, he remains non-reactive and moves on. He can also be easily redirected if a dog or owner prefers not to greet.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Cat Friendly.
Ajax is curious but friendly with cats. He may chase if they run, but it appears playful rather than aggressive. No noticeable prey drive has been observed.
👧 Kid Friendly
Yes (in supervised interactions).
He has met children aged 4–6 both on walks and at home. He enjoys gentle pets, but as a young, enthusiastic dog, he can be unaware of his size and may accidentally knock small children over when excited.
🦮 Leash Skills
Ajax is doing wonderfully on leash. His excitement for the outdoors can make his pace quick, and he may pull toward interesting scents, but once he settles, his pulling decreases significantly. He responds very well to gentle guidance and directional cues. He has also enjoyed light jogs and seems comfortable at a faster pace.
🚻 House Trained
Yes.
Ajax is fully house trained and sleeps through the night (approximately 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.).
He shows some separation anxiety when someone leaves—even if others remain in the home—and may bark or cry until the vehicle leaves the driveway. He settles quickly afterward, and during short trials (~1 hour), he has not been destructive or engaged in counter-surfing.
🍖 Food & Training
Prefers his kibble moistened with water or broth and eats meals in a slow feeder.
Not picky otherwise.
Commands: Sit and down (excellent), recall (improving), touch and leave-it (in progress).
Working on waiting at thresholds.
Crate trained: Goes to his crate on cue, receives dinner there, and puts himself to bed in it at night.
🚗 Vehicle Behaviour
Ajax loads into the car confidently and shows no signs of nervousness or motion sickness.
A previous foster noted he once jumped out of a car window, so windows must remain only partially open. He can become anxious around other dogs in the car and will benefit from continued desensitization.
🐾 Other Behaviours to Note
Loves being outside and may bolt through an open door if given the chance.
Off leash, his recall is not yet reliable—fenced yards or enclosed parks are recommended. He has not attempted to jump fences.
As a young dog, he may become mouthy or jump when overstimulated. He responds well to calm verbal cues (“Nu-uh/No”) and redirection with toys.
Benefits from several shorter walks or a mix of short walks and yard play, as he can become overstimulated on long outings.
Can be startled when someone grabs his collar directly; alternative redirection is best.
May bark at people, dogs, or unfamiliar things—confidence-building practice is ongoing.
