Background

Teddy originally came into care through Snow Dog Society after being found abandoned in Nunavut. From what his family was told, he was found outside in a box in freezing-cold conditions. Teddy was subsequently brought into care and found his way into a loving home, where he has been very cherished.

Description

Teddy is an incredibly handsome, sweet, intelligent boy who forms very strong bonds with his people. He loves being near his person and will happily follow you from room to room around the house. He would be an excellent companion for someone who works from home or is able to spend a lot of time with him.

Teddy is a very smart dog who genuinely enjoys learning. He knows his basic commands, including sit, down, stay, and shake, and does very well with training. His ideal home will be with someone who understands the importance of ongoing training, structure, and mental stimulation.

He is also an active boy who needs plenty of exercise. Walks, hikes, camping trips, and adventures are some of Teddy's favourite things. He absolutely loves water and will happily wade shoulder-deep into rivers and lakes. When he doesn't get enough physical and mental exercise, he can become overstimulated and may start chewing things or getting overly excited in the home.

Teddy is incredibly affectionate and loves his people deeply. He can become very excited when reunited with someone after they've been away and may even have a little excitement tinkle. Because of how attached he becomes to his people, he would not be well suited to a home where he is left alone for a full workday on a regular basis.

Dog Friendly

Yes.

Teddy is very sweet with other dogs, although he can be quite "mouthy" and is still working on developing better self-control and appropriate play skills.

Cat Friendly

Depends

Teddy currently lives with two cats and has been able to coexist with them, but he has a strong instinct to chase if they run or jump. He has not harmed the cats, but his interest in chasing them has become more intense as he has matured. For this reason, Teddy will need a dog-savvy cat home with confident cats and adopters who are prepared to carefully manage and supervise their interactions.

Prey Drive

Yes.

Teddy has a strong prey drive and loves to chase other animals. His new family will need to be mindful of this and provide appropriate management and outlets for his instincts.

Kid Friendly

Yes.

Teddy is good with children, but his energy level can be intimidating when he gets the zoomies. A home with older or dog-savvy children may be the best fit, particularly children who are comfortable around a large, energetic dog.

Leash Skills

Teddy is not currently leash trained and will need continued work in this area. His new family should be prepared to make leash training part of his ongoing training plan.

House Trained

Yes.

Teddy is fully house trained and will go to the door when he needs to go outside.

Food

Teddy is not particular about his food.

Training

Teddy is very intelligent and enjoys training. He currently knows:

• Sit
• Down
• Stay
• Shake a paw

He would thrive with an owner who enjoys training and is willing to continue building his skills through positive reinforcement, structure, and consistency.

Travel

Teddy travels well and has enjoyed camping and longer adventures with his family. On particularly long trips, he can become a little antsy or unsettled, but eventually settles down and naps.

Medical

Teddy has been diagnosed with Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) affecting his shoulder.

His family reports that he can develop a limp when he plays too hard or overexerts himself, particularly during intense play with other dogs. His activity will need to be carefully managed to prevent him from overdoing it.

Teddy will require surgery in the future to address this condition. His medical needs and surgical plan should be discussed with his veterinarian and prospective adopters so that everyone is prepared for his ongoing care.

Despite his orthopedic condition, Teddy loves being active and participating in adventures. His future family will need to find the right balance between providing the exercise and enrichment he needs while respecting his physical limitations.

Other Notes

Teddy is looking for someone who wants a true companion — a dog who will be by your side, follow you around the house, join you on adventures, and then happily curl up for plenty of cuddles.

His ideal home will:

• Have someone home much of the day or be able to provide plenty of companionship
• Be committed to ongoing training and positive reinforcement
• Provide regular, appropriate exercise and mental stimulation
• Be cat-free
• Understand and manage his prey drive
• Be prepared to continue working on leash skills and impulse control
• Be able to carefully manage his activity because of his shoulder condition
• Be prepared for his future orthopedic surgery
• Appreciate a very affectionate, energetic, intelligent dog who wants to be involved in everything

Teddy is the kind of dog who will give his whole heart to his person. He is handsome, hilarious, affectionate, smart, adventurous, and incredibly loving.
