Adoption Profile
Background
Rex is a large Mastiff mix with a giant head and an equally giant presence. He came into care on May 10, 2026, after his owner's brother moved away and could no longer care for him. Rex had spent his life living outdoors in a fenced pen alongside his mother, Cacao, with only a broken doghouse for shelter. He had very little exposure to the world, received no formal training, and experienced significant neglect. There are also concerns that he may have suffered abuse in the past.
Rex was neutered on May 13, 2026, and is now fully vetted, including Rabies and DAPP vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping.
Description
Rex is a sweet but complex dog who will require a very experienced home. Despite his size and strength, he still behaves much like an oversized puppy who has never been taught boundaries, manners, or how to safely navigate the world.
Because of his history, Rex can be unsure of new situations and people. While he can be affectionate and gentle, his demeanor can change quickly if he feels threatened or uncomfortable. Due to his strength, lack of socialization, and potential bite risk, Rex requires an adult-only home with an experienced handler who understands giant breeds and positive training methods.
He has tremendous potential, but he will need patience, structure, consistency, and ongoing training to help him become the best version of himself.
🐾 Dog Friendly
Not tested with other dogs.
🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Not tested with cats or small animals. Due to his size, strength, and unknown prey drive, Rex should not be placed in a home with cats or smaller animals.
👧 Kid Friendly
No.
Rex is too large, strong, and untrained to safely interact with children at this time.
🦮 Leash Skills
Rex has no leash training. In his previous home, he was only walked off-leash within the community and would simply follow his owner. He will require patient leash training and a handler capable of managing a powerful giant-breed dog.
🚻 House Trained
No.
Rex has never lived inside a home and has not been tested for house training. His future family should expect to start from the basics with both house manners and indoor living.
🍖 Food & Training
Rex is fed kibble twice daily and is not known to be picky with food.
He has received no formal training and will need guidance in all areas, including basic obedience, household manners, leash skills, confidence building, and socialization.
🚗 Vehicle Behaviour
Rex is generally calm during travel. During his flight from the community to Yellowknife, he experienced some nausea but was not destructive, reactive, or aggressive.
