Adoption Profile
Background
Nauuq arrived in our care extremely emaciated and dehydrated, weighing under 30 lbs. She is expected to be approximately 55โ65 lbs when she reaches a healthy weight.
She is currently receiving 5 meals a day as she works toward safely gaining weight, rebuilding her strength, and becoming healthy. She needs a dedicated foster who can give her the time, patience, structure, and love she deserves throughout her recovery.
Despite everything she has been through, Nauuq is an incredible girl. She is sweet, affectionate, and absolutely loves her people. She is smart, incredibly food motivated, and eager to learn. She already knows โsitโ and โshake,โ sleeps well in a crate, travels beautifully in the car, and is wonderful with other dogs.
Nauuq has come such a long way, and we are so excited to watch her continue to blossom.
Description
Nauuq is a loving, affectionate girl who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. Her favourite place is right beside you โ whether that's curled up on the couch, relaxing on her dog bed beside you, or snuggling in bed.
She is incredibly food motivated and eager to please, which makes her a wonderful candidate for continued positive-reinforcement training.
She is still learning the ins and outs of being a house dog and will need continued guidance with home manners. She is currently working on counter surfing and enthusiastic greetings, as she can jump up when saying hello or when she gets excited.
With patience, consistency, structure, and love, we know Nauuq will continue to thrive.
๐พ Dog Friendly
Yes!
Nauuq has been wonderful with the big, medium, and extra-small dogs in her foster home. She enjoys having canine friends and loves to play.
A home with another large, playful, appropriately matched dog would be a wonderful fit for her.
๐ฑ Cat Friendly / Prey Drive
Cat compatibility is currently unknown.
Nauuq has shown some prey drive, so smaller animals will require careful introductions and appropriate management.
๐ง Kid Friendly
Yes!
Nauuq has been wonderful with her foster family's two toddlers and infant. She loves people and has been affectionate and gentle with the children in her foster home.
As with any dog, interactions with young children should always be supervised.
๐ฆฎ Leash Skills
Nauuq is still learning!
She has been on quite a few walks but currently pulls quite a bit and will need continued leash training.
She can become nervous when loud trucks pass by, so her family will need to be patient while she builds confidence and learns that the world around her is safe.
Because Nauuq may be a flight risk, secure handling and management are extremely important. She should never be given an opportunity to bolt or wander.
๐ป House Trained
Mostly!
Nauuq is doing well with going outside and has had only a few accidents, primarily when she first arrived in foster care.
She is learning the routine and continues to improve with consistency, structure, and regular opportunities to go outside.
๐ Food & Training
Food is absolutely the way to Nauuq's heart! ๐ฅ
After experiencing severe starvation and food insecurity, she is understandably extremely food motivated.
Nauuq is currently receiving 5 meals a day as she works toward a healthy weight. Because of her history and extremely emaciated condition, she has shown some resource guarding around food. This is understandable given what she has experienced.
Her foster family will need to continue providing consistent meals, appropriate management, and positive training around food. As Nauuq learns that she will always have access to regular meals and never has to worry about going hungry again, we expect her relationship with food and her resource guarding to improve over time.
Nauuq is smart, eager to please, and already knows โsitโ and โshake.โ She is going to be a quick learner and will thrive with positive, reward-based training.
She is also working on counter surfing and jumping up to greet people. These are manageable behaviours that will require consistency and patience.
๐ Vehicle Behaviour
Nauuq travels beautifully!
She has been on several car rides and remains calm and relaxed in the vehicle. She has shown no signs of distress and is happy travelling with her canine friends.
๐พ Other Behaviours to Note
Nauuq has been through more than any dog should ever have to experience, but she hasn't let that stop her from being an incredibly loving girl.
She loves her people, enjoys canine companionship, is smart and eager to learn, and is beginning to discover how wonderful life can be.
She does need continued training as she learns home manners, particularly around counter surfing and enthusiastic greetings. Her family will also need to be mindful of her food resource guarding and prey drive.
Most importantly, Nauuq needs people who understand that she is still recovering. She needs time to safely gain weight, rebuild her strength, develop confidence, and learn that she is finally safe.
