Background

Joey is a 3-year-old Husky from Wekweètì who is currently being fostered in Yellowknife through a collaboration with Tłı̨chǫ Animal Care Society. He spent his first three years with the same family, living in a home with a mother, three children, four cats, and six other dogs. For the first year and a half of his life he lived indoors, but as the number of dogs in the home increased, he and three of his littermates were moved outdoors on tie-outs.

Although Joey wasn't mistreated, he arrived in foster care underweight due to inconsistent nutrition. After a month in care, he has regained a healthy weight and is thriving. Joey is up to date on his vaccinations and deworming and only requires his rabies vaccine.

Description

Joey is a handsome white Husky with a distinctive pink nose and an incredibly gentle nature. He's calm, affectionate, and has a wonderfully sweet personality. While he can be a little shy when meeting new men due to growing up in a women-only household, he warms up once he realizes he's safe. Joey isn't the type of dog to demand constant attention—instead, he's quiet, respectful, and enjoys being close to his people in his own gentle way. He has shown no signs of aggression or reactivity and is an incredibly lovable companion.

🐾 Dog Friendly

Yes! Joey has lived with multiple dogs throughout his entire life and is very comfortable around canine companions. Because he has always had other dogs around, he would do best in a home with another friendly dog to help him feel secure.

🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive

Joey lived successfully with cats during the first year and a half of his life, and his previous owner believes he would do well with cats again. Because he hasn't lived with them recently, slow introductions are recommended. He does have some prey drive toward squirrels, which is typical of many Huskies.

Yes! Joey grew up surrounded by children and is gentle, patient, and respectful with them.

Joey walks well on leash and is comfortable being handled during walks.

Yes! Joey is fully house trained and has excellent manners in the home.

🍖 Food & Training

Joey eats a lamb-based kibble because chicken causes digestive upset and diarrhea. He knows his basic commands and enjoys routine. Joey experiences some separation anxiety and does not do well in a crate, so he'll thrive in a home where someone is around often or where he has another dog for companionship.

🚗 Vehicle Behaviour

Joey has had very little experience riding in vehicles, having only been in a car once. He isn't comfortable with car travel yet, but with patience, positive reinforcement, and gradual exposure, he should continue to build confidence.

🐾 Other Behaviours to Note

Joey is an incredibly sweet, gentle dog with a calm disposition. He may be cautious when meeting unfamiliar men, but he gains confidence quickly once he feels safe. He isn't overly demanding for attention and prefers a quieter approach to building relationships. Joey has shown no signs of aggression or reactivity and would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a kind, loyal, and easygoing Husky. His ideal home would include another friendly dog, a patient family, and an understanding of his need for companionship.
