Adoption Profile

Background

Cacao is a 5-year-old spayed female who came into care on May 11, 2026. She is originally from Gamètì, NT, where she spent her life living outdoors. Her previous owners made the difficult decision to surrender two of their three dogs after recognizing they no longer had the financial means or capacity to properly care for them.

Cacao was flown from Gamètì to Yellowknife for a spay and neuter clinic. Following her veterinary care, she remained in rescue while the family's remaining dog was returned home. Prior to coming into care, Cacao lived in a pen and had limited exposure to life outside of that environment.

Description

Cacao is a sensitive girl who is still learning that people can be trusted. She can be fearful when she feels trapped or cornered and may growl or attempt to snap if her warning signals are ignored. However, once she feels safe, she is manageable to leash, enjoys going for walks, and likes spending time in a secure fenced area.

She has experienced conflict with another female dog in her previous home and is still rebuilding her confidence. Cacao would thrive with a patient, experienced adopter who understands fearful dogs and is willing to help her develop trust at her own pace. With time, consistency, and kindness, she has the potential to blossom into a loyal companion.

🐾 Dog Friendly

Cacao can be reactive toward other dogs, particularly due to past conflicts with her sister, who frequently attacked her. She successfully shared a pen with her son, Rex, while living in the community and may do well with carefully managed introductions and compatible dogs. She will need time to feel safe and secure around unfamiliar dogs.

🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive

Unknown. Cacao has not been tested with cats or small animals.

👧 Kid Friendly

Unknown. Due to her fearful nature and tendency to react when cornered, a home without young children would be the safest option unless proper introductions and management can be ensured.

🦮 Leash Skills

Cacao has not received formal leash training. Her previous owner walked her off-leash. She can be leashed and handled for walks, but she will benefit from continued positive reinforcement and confidence-building while learning leash skills.

🚻 House Trained

No. Cacao has spent her life living outdoors in a pen and will require patience and guidance while learning house manners and indoor living routines.

🍖 Food & Training

Cacao is not food picky and currently eats kibble twice daily. She has not received any formal training. She would benefit greatly from positive reinforcement training and confidence-building exercises to help her feel more secure in new situations.

🚗 Vehicle Behaviour

Cacao flew from Gamètì to Yellowknife for veterinary care. She became sick during the flight after being fed before travel and vomited in her crate. It is unclear how she travels under ideal conditions, but she may require gradual acclimation to travel and transportation.

🐾 Other Behaviours to Note

Cacao is considered a behavioural dog due to her fear-based reactivity. She communicates discomfort through growling and should never be forced into situations where she feels trapped. An experienced adopter willing to invest time into building trust and helping her gain confidence will be essential for her success.
