Adoption Profile

Background

Buddy grew up in a family home with young children, including a newborn and a 4–5-year-old. He entered care after his original owners could no longer keep him. He has since been in a mix of shelter and foster environments, interacting with multiple dogs and handlers.

Description

Buddy is a sweet, affectionate, playful young dog with a gentle side. He loves people, seeks affection, and even gives “hugs” by gently placing his paws on you. He has lots of energy, can entertain himself with toys, and enjoys being involved in whatever his humans are doing. He settles well with direction and is eager to please.

He can be vocal when first left alone, but with consistency and crate practice he settles. Buddy is underweight but full of youthful energy, and is steadily gaining condition.

🐾 Dog Friendly

Yes — with management

Buddy has been excellent with female dogs and showed no guarding or tension around them, even with toys or food present.
Around some male dogs, particularly those who are reactive themselves, Buddy may display resource guarding over high-value items such as toys or treats. He responds well to firm verbal cues and redirection. With structure and supervised introductions, Buddy can coexist well with balanced dogs.

🐱 Cat Friendly / Prey Drive

Unknown

Buddy has not been tested with cats. He is playful and curious but can also be very gentle. Any introductions to cats should be slow and always supervised for the first few months, with no unsupervised time until a safe relationship is established.

👧 Kid Friendly

Yes

Buddy previously lived with a newborn and a 4–5-year-old and did very well. He is gentle, friendly, and affectionate with children and polite with people, including strangers.

🦮 Leash Skills

Buddy is not accustomed to regular leash walking and may pull due to excitement, but he does stay with his handler and shows good potential to improve quickly with practice.

🚻 House Trained

Yes

He has good house manners and has been reliable in foster. He should be crated when alone in a new environment until a routine is established, even though he was free-roaming in his original home.

🍖 Food & Training

Buddy shows resource guarding toward other dogs, particularly males, around food, treats, and toys. However:

  • He shows no guarding toward humans.

  • Foster can place a hand in his bowl, pick up kibble, or hand-feed without issue—he remains relaxed and waggy.

  • He is responsive to redirection and has demonstrated the ability to sit calmly with other dogs for treats when given clear structure.

He benefits from management during mealtimes, being fed separately from other dogs, and supervision around high-value items.

Buddy is eager to please, intelligent, and enjoys structure.

🚗 Vehicle Behaviour

Excellent. Buddy loves car rides and travels well.

🐾 Other Behaviours to Note

  • Vocal when first left but settles with time; crate practice will help.

  • Very affectionate and loves physical closeness (“hugging”).

  • High energy and thrives with exercise and engagement.

  • Can self-entertain with toys.

  • Currently underweight; gaining steadily.
